A Kmart fan has revealed how she transformed an outdated and broken dining table into a designer piece using an unlikely $19 buy.

Sharing on a popular Facebook group, shopper Tara said she used four of Kmart’s Ribbed Storage Ottomans - which retail for $19 - to create a new base for the long oval table, which she picked up on Facebook Marketplace. Plywood Armchair

Tara then used strips of plywood to create a herringbone pattern on the tabletop, which she then whitewashed and painted with a clear sealer.

The end result is a sophisticated piece of furniture that fans say would demand top dollar in any luxury furniture store.

In her post, Tara explained exactly how she created the show-stopper table using “only basic tools”.

“I turned a $40 marketplace find into what I think is a beautiful dining table,” she said on the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia page.

“I used four of the Kmart ottomans stacked (cut down slightly) with a timber frame inside as the legs. To hide the join I used some gold painted aluminium strip trim.

“It was all a labour of love but I’m happy with the outcome.”

Revealing how she made the intricate table top, she said: “It’s actually 7mm plywood sheets that I cut into pieces.

“Then I just glued everything down with liquid nails and used my nail gun in some pieces (mostly where the extension of the table was). Whitewashed the lot and coated with a bench top clear.”

Fellow Kmart fans were blown away by the table, with several describing it as the “best Kmart hack ever”.

“It literally looks like its from a luxury furniture store. Great job!” said one.

Added another: “Wow! That’s the best and most beautiful Kmart hack I’ve ever seen! Well done!”

Wrote a third: “You need to open a store!”

Said one more: “WOW, just WOW. Probably the best Kmart hack ever.”

Tara said her dining chairs were also purchased from Kmart “a while back”, and her table accessories were also purchased from the retail giant.
